Covid-19: India tally makes biggest single-day jump, US toll crosses 50,000

The number of coronavirus cases confirmed by the central government jumped to 23,452 on Friday evening. The Indian Council of Medical Research has put the number at 23,502, and the Centre said it was reconciling the two figures. The toll rose to 723, while the number of patients who have recovered stood at 4,813.

During the press briefing, VK Paul, the head of a central panel on Covid-19 and a NITI Aayog member, claimed that the doubling pace of the number of cases was now around 10 days, much better than a month ago.

Globally, the toll from the pandemic crossed 1.93 lakh and more than 27.61 lakh declared cases have been registered in 185 countries and territories, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
