Delhi Violence LIVE Updates: BJP leader Kapil Mishra, who is under fire for his provocative speeches that reportedly fanned communal tensions in the Capital, today participated in a peace march organised at Jantar Mantar against the riots that have claimed 42 lives in northeast Delhi. Slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ rent the air as hundreds of people gathered at the place carrying the tricolour. The march was organised by the Delhi Peace Forum, an NGO.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh today asked the Delhi Police if the FIRs registered by them also included the names of those whose hate speeches incited the riots in the Capital. Attacking the police, Singh asked if the police was “under pressure” to not lodge an FIR against BJP leaders who fanned tensions.

JNU Admin, JNUSU at Loggerheads over Shelter for Riot Victims | Meanwhile, after the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Students’ Union (JNUSU) called for providing shelter to the Delhi riot victims inside the campus, the varsity administration has issued a warning to the union against any such step. The move has now invited yet another turn to ongoing tussle between the administration and JNUSU. “You have no legal right to make the JNU campus a shelter, the notice issued by varsity Registrar Pramod Kumar,” read. The university administration has also warned the students of disciplinary actions if the students are found doing so.

The Delhi High Court had on Wednesday directed the police to take “conscious decision” with respect to lodging of FIRs against alleged hate speeches by three BJP leaders, including Verma, in connection with the violence. In the Assembly election, Verma courted controversy over his terrorist” statement against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, following which he was banned from campaigning by the Election Commission.

During Delhi poll campaigning, BJP leader Parvesh Verma had claimed that Shaheen Bagh protestors would “enter your houses, rape your sisters and daughters, kill them”. He has also called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on several occasions. Along with Kapil Mishra and Anurag Thakur, Verma is among the three BJP leaders against whom activist Harsh Mander sought arrest in a plea filed before the Delhi High Court. The court has given the Delhi police three weeks time to respond to the pleas.

Delhi Govt May Launch WhatsApp No to Lodge Complaint about Hate Messages | The Delhi government is considering to issue a WhatsApp number on which people can complain about hate messages being circulated on the instant messaging app in wake of the riots that claimed 42 lives in northeast Delhi, sources said yesterday. They said the government will make an appeal to people to not forward any such message because forwarding any material which causes enmity amongst communities is a crime.

BSF Jawan’s House Burned Down in Khajuri Khas | Among the hundreds and thousands of Muslim families huddled inside their homes in various colonies of northeast Delhi over the last few days was that of one Mohd Anees. They hoped, or prayed, that the nameplate outside the two-storey house would give the rioters some pause. The mob was going one by one vandalizing and burning down each house in Khas Khajuri Gali on the afternoon of February 25. The nameplate said house number 76 belonged to Mohd Anees of the BSF and also showed its insignia. But it was not enough to save them from the violence that was to be unleashed. Those who died due to gunshot injury are Amaan (18), Dinesh (35), Head constable Ratan Lal (42), Istayak (24), Mohammad Mubarak Hussain (28), Mohammad Mudassar (30), Pravesh (48), Rahul Solanki (26), Shahid, Vir Bhan (50), Mohammad Furkan (30), Shad Mohammad (35). The police have not identified the cause of death of Rahul Thakur, Faizan, Nitin, and Vinod.

Class 8 Girl Missing Since Monday Reunites with Family | A 13-year-old girl, who had gone missing after school on Monday amid violence in northeast Delhi, was reunited with her parents yesterday, police officials said. The girl, a Class 8 student, had gone to take an examination at her school in the Khajuri Khas area, some 4.5 km from her residence in Sonia Vihar, on Monday. Her father, who deals in readymade garments, had told PTI that he was supposed to pick her up at 5.20 pm but failed as he got caught in the riots that ensued in the area.

Brother of IB Staffer Killed in Delhi Violence Seeks Police Protection for Family | The brother of 26-year-old Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma, whose body was pulled out of a drain in northeast Delhi’s riot-hit Chand Bagh, has sought police protection for his family after accusing former AAP counsellor Tahir Hussain and his associates of being behind the killing. “Hussain and his associates killed my brother. They are very powerful people and I want protection for my family for them. I asked for security and they (police) sent it, but right now we are in our village in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah,” Ankit Sharma’s elder brother Ankur said.

Traumatised Bengal Workers Return from Riot-hit Delhi | With panic writ large on their traumatised faces, 13 West Bengal residents returned to Kolkata yesterday after being trapped in Delhi without a morsel to eat during the recent arson that broke out in North-East Delhi. It was virtually a close brush with death for the 13 men. “We got trapped in the disturbances. We didn’t get anything to eat for three days. We couldn’t venture outdoor. The police finally rescued us,” said a youth, still looking tense as the team returned to Howrah station by Kalka Mail.

16-year-old Boy Missing Since Sunday | A Class XI student, Yusuf, left his home in northeast Delhi’s Chand Bagh, which has been wracked by violence for days, on Sunday to go to an eatery and hasn’t returned since. His father Yunus, 38, has been making frantic rounds of hospitals and mortuaries for the last five days, hoping to find his 16-year-old son Yusuf. Asked why the family hasn’t lodged a police complaint yet, Yunus said, “The situation here hasn’t been conducive since Monday. “With hope fading, he said the family will now lodge a police complaint. Yusuf is the eldest of Yunus’ three children.

Family’s Search for Man Missing for 5 Days Ends at Morgue | Frantic search for the whereabouts of persons missing in the riots continued at different hospitals of Delhi and for the family of 22-year-old Monis it ended at the GTB Hospital morgue. Monis mother was wailing outside the mortuary as the family was called inside. They identified his body. He was missing since February 25. His cousin Ibrahim said Monis had gone to visit his mother in Badli and was returning to Mustafabad where he worked as a labourer.

Sanjay Singh Slams Delhi Police, Asks If BJP Leaders Have Been Booked for ‘Hate Speech’ | On Delhi police’s registration of 123 FIRs in connection with the riots, AAP leader Sanjay Singh hits out at the law enforcement agency asking them if the names of the BJP leaders who gave “provocative statements” have been incorporated in the complaint or not. He says, “Are the names of those who set Delhi on fire by giving provocative statements in these FIRs? An Anguished Son Goes from Pillar to Post for Treatment of Wounded Father | “I was sleeping with my father on the road in Loni today. My father left for work around 5 in the morning. I tried to stop him from going anywhere as I was scared due to the violence, but he said ‘what will we eat if we don’t earn’ and left,” Salman, a differently-abled by birth, said, adding “we did not eat any thing for two-three days.” Salman said, “Two people brought my father in a very bad condition. His head was bleeding. He asked me to take him to any hospital. I kept him in a cart and took him to at least three hospitals, but no one admitted him. The hospital demanded Rs 3,000 for his treatment. I brought him to GTB Hospital today with the help of a few people, who even helped me with some money but by the time he was dead.”
