Hyderabad fraudster creates fake PM CARES ID, booked under IT Act

HYDERABAD: Cybercrime police in Hyderabad and a security thinktank on Friday busted a racket by a fraudster, who created fake UPI IDs that resembles the one created for the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation Fund.

A suo moto case was registered by cops against a person, who they have not named yet, after the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) tracked several fake UPI IDs which are similar to the UPI ID of PM CARES fund – pmcares@sbi.

Some of the fake UPI IDs include pmcares@pnb, pmcares@hdfcbank, pmcare@yesbank, pmcare@ybl, pmcare@upi, pmcare@sbi and pmcares@icici, police said.

“The pmcare@sbi UPI ID, which closely resembles the genuine UPI ID, has become active today. We appeal to people to verify the UPI ID and registered name of the account holder before making any donations,” said ACP KVM Prasad.

“The original PM CARES fund UPI id is – pmcares@sbi and its registered account name is PM CARES. For further details of PM CARES fund, people are advised to visit the website pmindia.gov.in,” Prasad added.

The original PM fund was set up with the primary objective of dealing with any kind of emergency or distress situation, including the one posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and to provide relief to the affected.

After the fund was set up and bank account and UPI ID details were circulated to people to deposit the money for relief, several fraudsters set up UPI IDs.

Police registered a suo moto case under sections 66-C & D of the IT Act, 420 and 419 of the IPC. To locate the person, police are gathering the details of the account holder.
