Record 356 new corona cases, 4 deaths in Delhi in a day

NEW DELHI: Delhi and Maharashtra witnessed a big surge in
Covid-19 cases on Monday with the capital recording 356 new cases and the western state 352, their highest single day tallies. Together, these two states account for 37% India’s Covid-19 count which crossed the 10k mark at 10,450.

Delhi continues to pay a heavy price for the Tablighi outbreak with 79% of cases related to the Nizamuddin markaz. The cases are designated as ‘under special operations’ by Delhi government.

The overall tally includes 1,276 new cases on Monday, the highest so far by a big margin and a sharp 67% rise from the number reported on Sunday (763). The death toll due to the disease has been recorded at 358, with 29 added on Monday. Maharashtra and Delhi again account for 188 (160 Maharashtra and 28 Delhi) of the total deaths.

UP too recorded a big spike in cases, adding 112 to take its count of cases to 589.

There was, however, better news from other parts of the country with the health ministry saying that 25 districts which had Covid-19 cases did not report any for the past 14 days. The disease has been reported from 380 of India’s 732 districts so far. 857 people have recovered from the disease.

In Delhi, of Monday’s 356 fresh cases as many as 325 new positive cases are related to the Tablighi Jamaat outbreak, officials said. The other positive cases included a woman at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital who had delivered a baby four days ago and a doctor and a nurse at a prominent private hospital among others. The state also recorded four Covid-19 deaths, taking its total toll to 28.

Maharashtra recorded 11 fresh Covid-19 deaths, taking the state’s death toll to 160. It has reported maximum 2,334 Covid-19 cases, followed by Delhi (1,510), Tamil Nadu (1,173) and Rajasthan (897).

Tamil Nadu has 11 Covid-19 deaths. This includes a 56-year-old orthopaedic surgeon from Nellore who died due to Covid-19 in a private hospital in Chennai on Monday. The state registered 98 new cases, including three doctors.

In Karnataka, a 55-year-old Covid-19 patient died in Kalaburagi district, taking the total number of deaths due to the infection in the state to seven. Karnataka Covid-19 tally rose to 247, with 15 new cases confirmed on Monday.

In Telangana, one person died and 61 new coronavirus cases were reported. While the overall coronavirus tally touched 592, including 103 persons who have recovered, 17 persons have so far succumbed to the deadly virus.

Gujarat registered 56 fresh Covid-19 positive cases taking the total tally to 572 positive cases. Death toll in the state climbed to 26 deaths after two more deaths–one each from Ahmedabad and Vadodara – were recorded on Monday.

Vadodara recorded a young death. “A 27-year-old man has died at Gotri Hospital on Sunday night. He was already under treatment for dengue and his father and uncle were identified positive cases.”

A 76-year-old man, admitted in SVP Hospital in Ahmedabad, succumbed to the infection on Monday. He had co-morbidity in form of heart and lung disease including pulmonary fibrosis, said senior health officials.

In UP, a three-month-old baby boy tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday. Reported in Basti district, the patient is a contact and relative of Hasnain Ali, a 24 year-old youth, who was diagnosed of coronavirus posthumously at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur.

According to data from the health department, the baby is UP’s youngest coronavirus positive patient. Prior to him, an eight-month-old baby in Noida tested positive to the infection and was declared as the youngest case of Covid-19 in the state. On a national scale, a three-day-old baby in Mumbai is India’s youngest Covid-19 patient. Born to a couple in Chembur area, the baby is undergoing treatment at Kasturba Hospital.

Kerala continues to have a declining trend in Covid-19 incidence. In an indication that the Covid-19 case graph has well and truly flattened in the state, local authorities said they recorded more patient discharges than positive cases on Monday. Only three positive cases were reported while 19 people have recovered, after consecutive negative tests. The state has so far reported 378 cases since the outbreak.

In Bihar, two more persons tested positive for Covid-19, taking the number of Covid-19 patients in the state to 66. Jharkhand recorded five new cases, taking the states tally of the novel coronavirus cases to 24, of which are 22 active cases, while two have died.
