Lakhamandal Shiva Temple

Sacred Overview & Architectural Heritage

Lakhamandal is an ancient stone temple complex celebrated for its historical ties to the Mahabharata epic, identified with the infamous Lakshagriha (palace of lacquer) constructed by Duryodhana to immolate the Pandavas. The site features an exquisitely polished graphite Shivalinga that reflects surrounding objects with mirror-like clarity when doused with water. Guarding the sanctum are two ancient stone sculptures of dwarapalas (Manav and Danav) and an extensive open-air pavilion showcasing hundreds of intricately carved 8th to 12th-century stone lingams unearthed across the valley.
