Katarmal Sun Temple, also known as Baraditya Temple, is an extraordinary 9th-century monument erected by the Katyuri king Katarmalla. Standing at an elevation of 2,116 meters overlooking the Kosi river valley near Almora, it is considered India’s second most important Sun temple after Konark. The main shrine is surrounded by 44 miniature stone shrines, meticulously engineered so that the first rays of the dawn sun fall directly upon the Surya idol inside.
