Maa Naina Devi Temple

Sacred Overview & Architectural Heritage

Maa Naina Devi Temple graces the northern shore of the emerald Naini Lake at Mallital. Mythologically celebrated as one of the 51 Shaktipeethas, it marks the sacred spot where the eyes (Nayan) of Goddess Sati dropped into the lake as Shiva performed his grief-stricken Tandava dance. The sanctum enshrines two eyes symbolizing the goddess alongside representations of Kali and Ganesha. Rebuilt after the devastating 1880 landslip, the temple is the cultural beating heart of Nainital town.
