Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is nestled in a forested mountain valley enclosed by the Manikoot, Brahmakoot, and Vishnukoot peaks near Rishikesh. According to Hindu mythology, it is the sanctified spot where Lord Shiva consumed the venomous Halahala poison that surfaced during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). The poison stained his throat blue, giving him the moniker Neelkanth (The Blue-Throated One). The temple architecture showcases colorful relief carvings depicting the Samudra Manthan episode.
